Meet Our Alta Plaza Park Gardeners

Please extend a warm welcome to Roberto Chavez, who comes to us after 12 years as head groundskeeper at Kezar Stadium.  While highly experienced in turf maintenance, Roberto oversaw the extensive blooms at Pier 39 for 10 years and served the Hunter's Point neighborhood as well.  And continuing to serve two days a week at Alta Plaza is Casey Dos Santos Allen, who also oversees Lafayette Park.

Roberto replaces Todd Sucy, who has returned to his previous park properties at the Japantown Peace Plaza and the Cottage Row Garden, which borders historic Victorians dating from the mid-1800's.

SFRPD apprentices augment the gardeners, and it is hoped that, with the increased maintenance requirements of our new entry way plantings, staffing levels will increase for the beautification of our 12 acre park.

Park Vandalism Update

While incidences of park damage have decreased, the Friends of Alta Plaza Park continue to work with RPD Park Services staff and monitor SFPD Northern Station and SFRPD Park Rangers patrols.

Again, park users should be vigilant and can report incidences and hazardous conditions as follows:

  • If witnessing vandalism in progress, call the SFPD non-emergency phone number: 415-553-0123

  • If reporting evidence of vandalism, call San Francisco Park Rangers: 415-242 6390

  • If reporting a physical safety issue or hazardous  situation in the park, call 311

Washington & Scott Entryway

Proclaiming that a steady downpour provides ideal conditions for plantings, a hearty team of seasoned SFRPD gardeners and apprentices tackled the Washington/Scott park entry to fill the barren expanses with an assortment of drought-tolerant greenery on January 15th. With our continuous rainfall, we can look forward to bountiful blooms this spring.

Subsequent northside entry plantings planned for February and March will be Jackson/Scott, Jackson/Steiner, and Jackson/Pierce.  Our Clean & Green Day volunteers will participate in the Jackson/Pierce planting on Saturday, March 9, from 10:00AM to 1:00PM.
